Is Hikvision a good brand?

Yes. Hikvision offers more resolution, better night-time performance and smarter detection per dollar than most competitors. For the majority of residential and commercial installations, it’s a straightforward recommendation.

The image quality is excellent — particularly in low light, which matters for cameras covering driveways, rear access and outdoor entertaining areas after dark. Remote viewing through the Hik-Connect app is reliable and easy to use once it’s set up.

What makes Hikvision stand out?

Should I buy Hikvision online and install it myself?

We’d recommend against it. The image quality of a professionally installed system and a DIY kit from an online retailer can look similar on paper — but the difference shows up in camera placement, cable quality, recorder configuration and remote access setup.

Poor camera placement is the most common issue we see with self-installed systems.

A camera pointed at the wrong angle misses the entry point it was supposed to cover entirely. A professionally installed Hikvision system, configured correctly from the start, will outperform a self-installed one every time.

Is Hikvision banned in Australia?

Hikvision is not banned for private residential or commercial use in Australia. It is legal to purchase and install in homes and businesses.

What is accurate is that Australia’s Department of Defence announced the removal of Hikvision cameras from defence buildings, reflecting government-level national security concerns. This applies to government and sensitive critical infrastructure — not suburban homes or private businesses.
