How Many CCTV Cameras Does My Home or Business Actually need?

We get this question often, and honestly - it depends on your property. Whether it's a family home or business, the answer will be different. It comes down to your layout, your priorities, and what you actually want to capture.

Start with your entry points.

Think about every way someone could get onto your property:

  • Front door or main entrance

  • Back door, sliding glass door or rear access

  • Side gate or laneway

  • Garage or carpark— especially if it connects directly to the house

For most homes and businesses, covering those four areas is your starting point for useful coverage.

Your property layout matters more than you think.

A single-storey home on a flat block is straightforward to cover. A multi-level property on a sloped block with a pool, side access and a long driveway is a different story. The same goes for a business with a warehouse, loading dock and a carpark.

Things that typically push the number up:

  • Corner blocks with two street frontages

  • Long driveways — a camera at the gate and one near the house works well

  • Pools or large entertaining areas

  • Detached sheds or garages that sit outside your main camera arc

  • Staff-only areas, server rooms or high value stock areas in a business.

  • Customer facing spaces like reception, retail areas or waiting areas.

Placement beats quantity every time.

A poorly placed camera is almost as useless as no camera at all. There’s a real difference between knowing something happened and knowing who did it.

We examine every property before I recommend a system. A tailored setup always outperforms a generic one, and I’d rather take the time to get it right than have you spend money on cameras that don’t do the job.

A rough guide to get you started:

Apartment / Townhouse — 2–3 cameras

3–4 bedroom house — 4–6 cameras

Large home or acreage — 6–10 cameras

Small business premises — 4–8+ cameras

These are starting points — every property is different.
